PGA Tour Golf: Thomas Detry Winner Virgin Title with dominant seven-shot victory at WM Phoenix Open | Golf news

Belgium’s Thomas Detry emphatically claimed the first due to Tour victory in his career with a seven-shot triumph on the WM Phoenix Open.

After completing the tournament at 24-Under couple, Detry is the first Belgian to win on the tour.

American duo Michael Kim and Daniel Berger both shot the last round 67s to finish bound number two on 17-Under.

The only time Detry appeared under slight pressure was when Berger hollowed his fifth birdie of the round at the 15th to fleeting the lead down to only two shots.

But Detry emphasized his confidence by following Berger in for his own birdie before effectively running the competition when a fantastic approach to pair-three 16. A tap-in birdie created. In fact, Birds PGA Tours latest wins the last three holes in the tournament.

An Jubilant Detry celebrated the 18th green with his two children and wife, Sarah, before being soaked in champagne by a waiting Matt Wallace who finished his week at six under a fine four-under final.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout (66) and Jordan Spieth (68) ended a further shot back on 16-Under.

Justin Thomas tiled in from 102 yards for Eagle eventually – a shot that propelled him to a draw for sixth with his colleague American Will Chandler and Scotland’s Robert Macintyre.

World # 1 Scottie Scheffler had started the day eight back on Detry and threatened briefly running on his first title of the year as he walked four during the first six holes.

But Birdies dried up to the Masters champion then, and once on the back nine, his round uncharacteristically fell apart when Bogeys on the 12th, 13th and 16th was followed by a double bogey on the perforate last.

Scheffler shot five to the rear nine, who dropped him back to a -over for the round and a draw for 25th place – his first finish outside the top 20 since last June’s U OS Open.
