Newcastle is back in the Champions League, so what does that mean for their transfer plans? Will they hold onto Alexander Isaac? Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie has answered all your questions ahead of summer …
‘Newcastle could make four signings’
Matt Lambie: What are the most important areas Newcastle seems to strengthen this window?
Keith Downie: Eddie Howe is looking for a new goalkeeper, a right-sided centerback, a right-wing and a tips that can play across the front.
That’s the wish list if none of the big men were to leave. For example, if a Bruno Guimaraes or an Anthony Gordon went, he would also need them.
BSCOTT1994: Are we limited again by PSR? If so, how?!
Keith Downie: Eddie Howe told us journalists a few weeks ago that they are no longer bound by PSR thanks to their inactivity in the last three windows.
It felt like a message to his players who had said they need help before next season, as much as something else. He followed up by saying that they will be active, but it won’t be a mass overhaul.
Although he likes to keep his cards close to his chest, I think he is very honest there and we see three, maybe four additions this summer.
But the right players need to be available, Howe has shown before not just taking someone to fill a place in the team. His plea on Sunday for the board to act quickly was very narrative …
Charlie: What is the budget we have this summer or is too hard to say?
Keith Downie: I would expect Newcastle to spend over 100 million. £, if the offers are there to be done in positions they focus on.
‘Newcastle in strong position with Isaac’
Liam98: Could Alexander Isaac leave?
Keith Downie: The Champions League qualification makes it significantly easier to hold on to Alexander Isaac. He has three years back on his contract and the club is in a strong position to hold and hold him this summer.
Isaac will be more pleased to know that he is playing in the Champions League if he becomes – it was a problem last summer.
I feel that the Swedish is seeing another step for itself in the future, and it may be something we will see next summer if they are unable to agree on a new deal.
Isaac knows he can earn more elsewhere and he is ambitious. Whether his ambitions can be met at Newcastle to see, but I expect at least one more season at St James’ Park.
Like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, however, he will see the club this summer. They need help.
‘Failed added significant will be harmful’
Jayhaw: How much of a bigger team do we need now we have Champions League football next season?
Keith Downie: I think internally and externally, there is an understanding that the current team is not strong enough to compete in the Champions League and Premier League.
Newcastle has not signed a player of note to three transfer windows and that will have to change this summer.
Howe has said it yourself, and failure to add significantly will be harmful next season and beyond … not least to the current players who have got Newcastle in this position.
Who could leave?
Scuba Steve: What players do you expect to leave the club this summer?
Keith Downie: Like Martin Dubravka, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett, Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson and maybe Joe Willock could potentially leave this summer.
What does Mitchell’s exit for transfer plans mean?
Adam Wright: Who will lead the transfer window with Paul Mitchell leading the transfer window?
Keith Downie: Eddie Howe will lead the window as he has done since he took office. He and Mitchell did not see an eye to eye from the start, and it felt as if the relationship had become unsustainable.
I was not surprised when I heard last week that Mitchell was planning to resign. It felt like something had to give.
Niall m: How will Paul Mitchell influence who we are targeting?
Keith Downie: This does not change their summer goals as Eddie Howe was on its way to it anyway.
It probably makes the process more streamlined, but will in the short term mean more work for Howe and CEO Darren Eales without Mitchell there to push the offerings.
Blythboy: Any news about who the new sports director could be to replace Paul Mitchell?
Keith Downie: I haven’t heard that yet and I don’t think the club is at that time.
Replacing Darren Eales as CEO is the more urgent case, and I can see the club through this summer window without a replacement for Paul Mitchell.
Given neither Dan Ashworth nor Mitchell have lasted long in the role, questioning whether they need a one at all that goes on.
Howe and his recruitment team have the full support of the owners considering his greatest success in previous transfer windows, not to mention the small question of success on site this season.
Your views on Newcastles transfer window
Thomas Liotaud: Newcastle cannot turn a blind eye to the situation of Lilles Jonathan David and Angel Gomes, both of which are free agents this summer.
Ashley Espo: We still carry some Deadwood from the Mike Ashley era – we are three seasons in the new regime and really need to upgrade our second string.
Great slim: In Eddie Howe we trust, give him a chance to spread his wings and give him a war box. What season he has given Newcastle.
Neil: Newcastle needs a goalkeeper, centerback, right-wing, striker, another backup-friend-back and possibly a backup # 10. We also have to get rid of a few names.
Sachin Patel: I’m Brentford fan, don’t sign Bryan Mbeumo.
Stickymag: Bryan Mbeumo can certainly improve the team. I don’t understand how Marc Guehi does. You can get better for less money.
Gary Midgley: I think it would be good to deposit Anthony Gordon to finance a really top right -wing right -wing.
Lilo: Eddie Howe Try to sign Rafa Leao from AC Milan and a solid young defender who can learn from Sven Botman and Fabian Schar, plus a young goalkeeper like James Trafford from Burnley.
Mattnufcdevon: We have seen in the past that not to strengthen and entertain the Champions League can cause the league and other cup competitions to suffer. For me, we definitely have to target the strength in depth as we still have a lot of players from previous eras.
John Swan: I would say a very big well done to Eddie Howe and the players as well as everyone else associated with Newcastle United. We are all so very proud of everything that has been achieved this season. I am really looking forward to this summer. HWTL!
