Gary Neville says Manchester United is in a “desperate situation” after Ruben Amorim’s side was down 4-1 by Newcastle on Sunday.
United capitulated in the second half of St. James ‘Park, as they suffered a 14th Premier League defeat this season, hit Harvey Barnes twice after Alejandro Garnacho canceled Sandro Tonalis opens, with Bruno Guimaraes’ late target and added United’s evil.
The defeat leaves man UTD 14. In the table, only three points over West Ham in 17th, and they are guaranteed to end with their lowest points ever in the Premier League.
Sky Sports‘Neville who talks about NBC Sportshanded down a brutal verdict on the current United team and said there is no lack of action from the players, but that they are “so under the standard and quality” required in Manchester United.
“I said at the start of the game that if Newcastle plays well, you will be beaten,” Neville said.
“They’re not a very good team, it’s as simple as that.
“The biggest concern is that there have been teams in the last five, six, seven years at Man Utd, where you have thought they are all talented players, but they do not give it all.
“The problem with this group of players they give it all. There is not a lack of effort. They are then below the standard and quality you need at that football club, all over the field.
“Apart from Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo maybe, I can’t think of any of them that I would hang my hat on.
“It’s a really desperate situation because the team is so bad in quality. They have old players and they’ve got young players who are nowhere near it. It’s a worrying situation.”
‘System is a problem’
Neville also continued to question Amorim’s system, which suggested that they do not currently have the players required to play how their Portuguese boss wants, and he does not see how it will change soon without time and better recruitment.
Neville added: “The system is a problem.
“I have been asking this question for about two months, who are the natural wingbacks? Players who are good in the future who have great energy and are good enough back. Who are these players?
“Who are these two players he plays behind the striker? They need a center-forward to carry the line. Who is the player who is available that will go to man UTD because there are seven or eight teams at the top of the league who have also had a striker.
“They are massive problems.”
“Frankly, you don’t know where to start, you don’t know where to build the first step from, and that’s the problem at the moment.
“A serious amount of time and good recruitment is required to that club to get right.”
Keane: Man Utd isn’t really good at anything
Roy Keane also pulled no beats on Super SundayStill, his summary was simple when he assessed United’s performance in St James’ Park.
“You look at certain teams in the Premier League and you hang your hat on certain things – they are big and strong or they are technically radiant. You look at Liverpool, they cross a lot of boxes,” he said.
“But you look at United, what would you hang your hat on? What would you say they really are, really good at? They don’t have a world -class striker, they don’t have a strong spine, they aren’t athletic.
“
Keane suggested that the signing of players without the Premier League experience had not earned United well.
“I don’t want to use the dreaded word: Recruitment. Do they get players this summer?” he continued.
“The majority of players they have brought into the last year or two are not used to the Premier League. You have to get some players who are used to the Premier League who have played 100, 200 games.
“You hope you get quality players for United, the money they’ve spent, but getting the right characters; Liverpool look at it, Brentford, Bournemouth. Obviously they have to be able to play and play at the highest level, but this group doesn’t show it.
“They’re not sturdy. They don’t roll up their sleeves and dig out the results.
“Now and again they do, and they pick up a good result, as they did in Man City, and they got a draw in Liverpool. But then other teams recently go to Old Trafford, every team gets a bit joy. Against Newcastle in the second half there were just holes everywhere. They run through United. United don’t even look big and strong.”
