John Higgins beat Mark Selby in the Tour Championship Final

John Higgins won five frames in a row to beat Mark Selby 10-8 in the Tour Championship final for what he described as the best victory in his long career.

Selby had previously won seven frames in order to move within two wins, but Higgins dug in and limited his opponent to only 18 points in the last five frames.

“It’s my best victory ever,” said Higgins, who ended a four-year wait for a ranking title in last month’s world open in China.

“I played an incredible champion and he looked like he wouldn’t miss, he tied me in knots. To do it against Mark gives me incredible belief that I can still mix it with the best players.”

The match between a couple of four -time world champions had seen them split two frames – Selby made a break of 135 in the other.

Higgins hit two breaks of 102 and another of 94, when he took control of the afternoon session, led 5-1 before Selby hit back with breaks of 112 and 136 to finish the session.

He continued the momentum in the evening, a break of 119 in the 13th frame that took him 8-5 ahead.

But Higgins responded with a 110 break in the next and fought for parity before getting victory with breaks of 84 and 132.

The eighth and last centuries of the match corresponded to the record for a best-19 framework final.
