How to use Lastpass Password Manager (step-by-step guide)

Lastpass’ History of Data Breaches makes it difficult to recommend as a viable password administrator in 2025. However, for those who want to try Lastpass, this article will show you how to set it and maximize its available features.

To set up and use Lastpass

1. Choose a LastPass -Subscription

Lastpass has two categories for its subscriptions: single users and families and business.

For the individual users and families plans, you can choose between free, premium and families. If you only need a basic password administrator, LastPass free allows unlimited password storage and comes with a password generator.

But with the free version, you miss important features such as advanced multifactor settings, emergency access and unlimited device access, offered only with the Premium Plan.

If you are a group or family who wants a centralized password management solution, Lastpass families may be better for you as it covers up to six users.

Companies can choose either LastPass teams or Lastpass Business. Teams cover up to 50 users, while the company is tailored to larger organizations. These two plans provide several business -centered features such as shared folders and an administrative console.

Fortunately, LastPass offers generous free attempts for both categories. In particular, the Lastpass Premium and Families have a 30-day test, while Lastpass teams and business have a 14-day trial.

I recommend going to one of these free attempts, depending on your needs. The good news is that LastPass does not require users to provide any payment information to access any of these free attempts. For this article I used LastPass Premium’s 30-day free trial.

To access one of the free attempts, simply click the “Try” button under your selected subscription.

2. Set the web app and browser extension

When you choose a plan, you will be redirected to create your Lastpass account. Here, Lastpass will ask you to provide an E -mail address and your Master password.

In theory, your Master password will be the only password you need to create on your own. It is also undoubtedly your most important password as it acts as the key that unlocks your vault that contains all your other passwords and credentials. Thus, it is important that you remember your master password.

When you have finished creating your account, Lastpass will ask you to install its browser extension. This is the most important way you interact with the service. I am using Google Chrome, so Lastpass redirected me to the Chrome Web Store.

After installing the browser extension, you can access the Lastpass’ Web Vault Application. Before doing this, I recommend that you attach the last Pass extension to your browser’s toolbar for easy access.

Now that you have the expansion up and running, it’s time to access your Lastpass Web Vault. To access it, go to the official Lastpass site and click Log In. Enter your E -Mail and Master password from there and you will be taken to the LastPass Web Vault application.

Your Lastpass Vault is where all your passwords, login and other credentials will be saved.

3. Use LastPass

The main reason for using a password administrator is to organize and secure your passwords. To illustrate how to do this, I’ve created a new account on LinkedIn.

On LinkedIn’s registration page you will see that there is a Lastpass icon on the username and password field.

By clicking the LastPass icon in the Password field, the Lastpass’ password generator brings up. Here, Lastpass automatically generates a random password for your new login.

By default, LastPass generates a password of 16 character-as you can configure to have uppercase letters and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Lastpass allows you to create a password with as many as 99 characters. In this case, I chose the first proposal from Lastpass’ password generator.

If you click on the generated password, ask Lastpass to ask you if you want to save the new login. Click “Add password” and there you go – you just created and stored your very first Lastpass login.

This login can now be found in your vault and LastPass is automatically filled in the next time you are on LinkedIn’s login page.

With that we have just saved our very first login using Lastpass!

Lastpass often asked questions (frequently asked questions)

Is Lastpass no longer safe?

Due to its recent data violations, I do not consider Lastpass as a secure password manager to use in 2025. For context, Lastpass was involved in two data violations in 2022, where the threat actor gained unauthorized access to encrypted customer data.

While the password administrator has since implemented changes to strengthen its security position, there is simply no need to put your data at risk. This is especially true that there are other top-tier access code managers who have not been hacked or involved in similar violations.

Does Lastpass have a free version?

Yes, Lastpass has a free version but has limited features compared to its paid counterpart. At Lastpass Free you can only access your password over while using one device type at a time. This means you can only see your passwords on a computer or mobile device, not both at the same time.

You also do not get Lastpass’ One to many sharing functions (which allows logino tunes that share with multiple people), encrypted file storage, advanced multifactor approval and emergency access. All of these features are available on any of Lastpass’ paid plans.

How is Lastpass added to Chrome?

To add Lastpass to Chrome, visit the Chrome Web Store, search for Lastpass and click “Add to Chrome.”

From there, Lastpass gives you steps on how to install and integrate their service into your chrome browser. You can also go to the LastPass download and download browser extension from there.

Which operating systems support Lastpass?

Lastpass supports Windows, Mac and Linux Operating Systems through their browser extensions. Specifically, it has browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera.

It also offers dedicated mobile apps for both iOS and Android.

What we think about Lastpass

In our full review, Lastpass received a rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars. We could not recommend LastPass due to its data violations from 2022, especially since a password manager’s main purpose is to protect user data.

While its free version and wide range of multifactor approval options are enticing, there are a number of Lastpass alternatives that we feel are better investments for your money -and data.
