The next generation of Apple operating systems is set to receive a serious overhaul. Apple’s iOS 19, iPados 19 and MacOS 16 will introduce a design closer in line with Visionos, with updates to icons, menus, apps, windows and system buttons, according to sources familiar with the case, quoted by Bloomberg.
Apple is moving toward an overall OS -experience
Apple’s goal is to make all its operating systems more coherent, enabling users to transfer seamlessly between devices. Since Visionos is the latest of Apple’s most important operating systems, it makes sense for the company to model the others after this to us rather than return to an older version.
Its Visionos drives Apple Vision Pro, a Mixed Reality headset that was first introduced in 2023. This is visually different from Apple’s other operating systems with a 3D, spatial interface optimized for gesture control rather than traditional screen taps; Apps are also circular and appear in liquid windows, and other elements have transparency and pronounced shade effects.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, macOS 16, the codename “Cheer”, represents the most significant update to the Mac operating system since 2020, when MacO’s Big Sur introduced a larger design overhaul along with features such as Control Center and Revamped Notifications.
The iPhone has not seen such a drastic design change since iOS 7 when Apple introduced a flat, minimalist design that replaced the skeuomorphic items in previous versions. Apple’s iOS 19 and iPados 19 is the codename “Luck.”
Macs and iPads to remain separately in spite of revision
The operating systems for iPads and MACs remain separated in this upcoming iteration despite their functional similarities. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests that maintaining different experiences for both devices is likely to be a strategy of driving sales and discouraging consumers from choosing only one unit. Nevertheless, Apple claims that keeping their operating systems separate allows them to optimize the experience for both Macs and iPads, according to sources.
Bloomberg’s sources requesting anonymity due to the project’s unannounced status indicate that the operating system overtakes is likely to be revealed at Apple’s worldwide developer conference in June. Apple may be expecting this message to help increase the sale of the fighting iPhone 16, while also deriving attention from the roll -out of Apple Intelligence features that allegedly “did not work properly” behind the scenes, according to Craig Federighi, the company’s software manager.
