Google -Recommendations to USA AI -Action Plan

AI is not just a scientific breakthrough – it’s a breakthrough in How we make breakthroughs.

We already see how AI can revolutionize healthcare, accelerate scientific discovery and transform our economy for the better.

But now it is up to us to seize the opportunity. And to do that, we need the right political framework to secure America’s position as an AI power center and support a new era with opportunities.

We share some ideas on this front in our response to the Office of Science and Technology Policy’s request for information.

Our response recommends focusing on three key areas:

  1. Invest in AI. The federal and local authorities should work together on political reforms to meet rising energy needs, a significant part of expanding the AI infrastructure. We also need export control that both protects our national security and allows America to export and provide AI services in foreign markets. US researchers need access to calculation resources for research, which means to forge new advanced partnerships with national laboratories. And the federal government should embrace a political framework that retains access to data for fair learning, promotes a risk-based approach to AI applications based on existing rules and prevents a chaotic patchwork of state-level rules on Frontier AI development.
  2. Accelerates and modernizes the government AI -Reconciliation. The government should lead an example in AI -admission and development. Ideas include implementation of multi-supplier, interoperable AI solutions and streamlining of purchasing procedures for AI and other new technologies.
  3. Promote Pro-Innovation Internationally. The federal government should advocate market -driven and widely adopted technical standards by building on the trading department’s leading role with the International Standards Organization and other standard setting organizations. In collaboration with industry partners and customized countries, we should also develop protocols and benchmarks around potential risks for Frontier AI systems. Finally, the administration can support US AI management by fighting restrictive foreign AI barriers.

As Vice President Vance said earlier this year in Paris, is now our chance to “catch lightning in a bottle.” AI gives us an opportunity to improve people’s lives everywhere – we have a responsibility not to let this opportunity slip through our fingers.

Make no mistake: Political decisions will shape the outcome of the current global AI competition. A pro-innovation approach that protects national security and enables widespread benefits, will help us realize AI’s transformative potential and ensure that America’s lead ends. Google is required to do its part, including by working with the federal government to ensure success with the AI action plan.
