AI presents the United States with a generational opportunity for extraordinary innovation and growth. The implementation of AI will grow the US economy, create jobs, accelerate scientific progress and more. Full realization of these opportunities requires effort to rapidly increase the capacity of the nation’s existing, sometimes outdated energy system. This in turn requires to accelerate innovation and investment in advanced energy technologies; Optimization of the use of the existing grid and unlocking the construction of new transmission infrastructure; and develop the workforce needed to build new energy infrastructure.
Today we share 15 political opportunities in a new paper entitled Power for a new era with American innovation. Many of these proposals have been incubated in political circles for some time when over a wide base of stakeholders and are taken from the broader discussion of political opportunities.
By unlocking advanced electricity resources and lattice infrastructure, the United States would enable all sources of electricity to contribute to a more reliable and affordable energy smoking. They now require constructively public and private cooperation to move on.
In addition to Google’s obligation to equip 1 million Americans with AI skills through AI Opportunity Fund, there is a demand for trade skills that can construct electrical infrastructure. In particular, a lack of electrical workers may limit America’s ability to build the infrastructure needed to support AI, advanced manufacture and a shift to pure energy.
Building on many years of delivery of digital development programs for workforce for people across the country, Google today announces support for efforts to train 100,000 electrical workers and 30,000 new apprentices in the United States. With funding from Google.org to Electrical Training Alliance (ETA) – an organization created by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association – ETA will integrate AI tools into its curriculum and increase the number of apprentices nationally. It will also give apprentices access to Google’s AI Essentials course to master AI skills.
With the support provided by Google, ETA’s program aims to increase the electrical workforce pipeline by 70% within the next five years. Of course, no single organization can solve the expected deficit alone, but through common public and private efforts to introduce and support training programs like this, the United States can develop a model for training the next generation’s workforce.
