I’ve talked to a number of politicians in the past few weeks. They all see Bitcoin as a value of value and believe that American citizens have the right to hold their private keys.
I cannot say that it does not feel good to hear us chose officials express these views and even propose bills that would codify pro-bitcoin law in the law. It is certainly refreshing, especially after the political antagonism that Bitcoiners and the Bitcoin industry endured during the Biden administration.
That said, there is still work that needs to be done and much of this work involves advocating advocacy to preserve our right to trade Bitcoin privately.
One of the best tools for privacy we have on the Bitcoin base layer is Bitcoin mixers that help users anonymize their transactions.
And one of the best known mixers was Samorai Wallet, which allowed users to mix their Bitcoin in a non-providing way. That is, developers and maintainers of the wallet never affected users’ private keys.
However, this software was closed early last year when the US Department of Justice (DOJ) pressed charges against Samorai developers, including conspiracy to run an illegal money transmitting business and conspiracy to commit money laundering. (The developers of Tornado Cash, Open Source Mixing Software implemented at Ethereum also face similar fees.)
Some politicians, including Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), have come out to support the Samorai developers, and the preparation of a letter to the former US legal lawyer, the honorable Merrick Garland, where they outlined that the developers clearly do not run a money that is transferring business according to the definition of such business in the final. Same that the senator has that Senator has a business that has a business in the 2019 financial financial business (with what hate that Senator has, that Senator has a business that has a business in a business in Finansguid from 2019. Luing from 2019 (immediately that Senator has senator, Senator, Senator Has HaDens has a business in a business in Fincen Guidance from 2019. Bills in which she calls on the US Treasury to “conduct a study of combating anonymous crypto active transactions such as asset mixers,” but I’ll take off.)
Mixers are incredibly important for human rights activists who need to maintain their anonymity when sending and receiving funds as well as for everyday people who value transaction protection.
Therefore, we need to bring this question under the attention of politicians, as many are not familiar with it, so hopefully to make more of them defended the Samorai developers and to see the importance of preserving American citizens’ right to use mixers.
For this reason, I ask you to use the letter template published by my colleague Shinobi at the end of this piece to write your representatives.
Just as we have gathered for free ross and to protect the right to self -preservation, we must gather in support of transaction protection.
This is something that I, the political correspondent for this publication, cannot do alone. I need your help. So please follow this call for action and inform your representatives about this matter, so when I have a conversation with them about it, they have some understanding of the problem.
